Nothing like a pre-bank holiday weekend give away!

Nothing makes me more generous than the prospect of a four day weekend, let me tell you, and I just so happen to have had five copies of the Jacques Rancière translations Mallarmé, Althusser's Lesson, Politics of Aesthetics, Chronicles of Consensual Times and Dissensus sat on my desk for over a week now. So! Time for a spring clean!

We asked 'In what year was Kant's first critique (The Critique of Pure Reason) published in the original German?' and the answer is, as nearly all of you knew, 1781.

And the winner is...

It's 1st August today (where is the year going?) which means our month long celebration of Rancière has come to an end. Of course, this also means it's time to announce the winner of our competition!

 

As most of you spotted, my original question was a little open ended... The Ignorant Schoolmaster (Stanford University Press, 1991) is the English translation of the original French Le Maître Ignorant (Fayard, 1987). I have, therefore, accepted both 1991 and/or 1987 as the correct answer. Those of you who sent in the correct answer were entered into a draw and the winner picked by one of my colleagues in the office.

 

So, without further ado, the winner is... Iain Campbell from Dundee, Scotland! Congratulations!

July is Rancière month at Continuum!

This summer has seen the publication of two fantastic new translations of emminent modern day philosopher Jacques Rancière. It's been an exciting couple of months for continental philosophy fans and so, to celebrate, I've declared July Rancière month!

After Finitude giveaway - winners announced

Win! One of five signed copies of After Finitude

This is a special competition that was originally to celebrate our first 1,000 followers on Twitter - but then we reached our first 1,000 much sooner than anticipated and have taken a bit of time getting the prize sorted.  But now, at last, we have our hands on 5 copies of After Finitude signed by Quentin Meillassoux to give away.

Philosophy in the City festival & competition to win £100 worth of books

An exciting new philosophy event is taking place during October in Liverpool (UK) and I'm happy to finally be able to tell everyone about it and link to the new website!  I have to warn readers not based in the UK that unless you can make a trip over here, you might want to look away!

Master-minded by the Philosophy Department at the University of Liverpool, with one of the driving forces being Continuum author Clare Carlisle, the Philosophy in the City festival runs between 9-24 October and will see a series of events that aim to 'de-mystify philosophy, raise awareness of what philosophers do and how philosophy happens, and provide local people with new opportunities to engage in philosophical reflection and debate.'

Winning essay for the Higher Education Academy student competition

You may remember that a while ago I posted up guidelines for entering a student competition we sponsored which was run by The Higher Education Academy.  The task was to write an essay which defends choosing to study your discipline (Philosophy, Theology or Religious Studies) at university.  A very timely question, I'm sure you'll agree, in light of the planned closure of Middlesex University's Philosophy department.

The winning entry has now been chosen and was submitted by Callum Ward who is at Liverpool University - congratulations, Callum! You can read Callum's entry here.

A snippet: 'As university budgets suffer under government austerity, they pass the brunt onto the less lucrative and apparently less useful humanities departments who are increasingly underfunded and in many institutions threatened with closure. Thus the critique forms the basis of decisions that will shape the nature of society and threaten the health of the disciplines. In view of this, this essay attempts to mount a defence of the humanities, particularly philosophy, using an argument at least as old as Plato - that for the good of society we must have vibrant philosophy.'

Peacock and the Buffalo competition winner

Thanks everyone for your entries - I can honestly say that we've never had so many for a competition before - Nietzsche is clearly popular!

There was only one prize for this competition, to win an advanced copy of The Peacock and the Buffalo (not yet out) along with Starting with Nietzsche and Nietzsche's The Birth of Tragedy - so someone out there would have the chance to significantly expand their own personal Nietzsche library!  And that person, picked completely at random, is Sam Howroyd - who is also the first competition winner we've ever had from our very own London town.  Still though, Sam, I'm going to be putting your prize into the post, just like all the others!

Competition: Win an advance copy of The Peacock and the Buffalo - and more!

We're continuing to celebrate the upcoming May release of The Peacock and the Buffalo - the first English translation of all of Nietzsche's poetry - now by bringing you a competition to win one of the first printed copies before it is published next month in the UK (if you're in the US, it will be even more advanced!)

The prize: a copy of The Peacock and the Buffalo (of course) - and we're also throwing in a copy of Starting with Nietzsche and the brand new Reader's Guide to The Birth of Tragedy for the one lucky winner.

I'm setting a very simple question: Who translated the poems in The Peacock and the Buffalo collection?

Student competition - win £250 cash and £100 worth of Continuum books!

Hi Everyone

I'm very excited to announce that we are sponsoring a country-wide competition (UK only - apologies to our other readers), run by The Higher Education Academy's Subject Centre for Philosophical & Religious Studies.  They are inviting responses of up to 2,000 words, in response to the question: What is the good of your discipline?  An especially crucial question in the light of the severe cuts universities are experiencing, with the humanities looking as though they will be hit particularly hard.

The winner will receive a £250 cash prize and £100 worth of books from our list, an invitation to the Higher Education Annual Conference and the winning entry will be considered for publication in the journal Discourse: Learning and Teaching in Philosophical and Religious Studies. 

Closing date is 12 noon, Monday April 12th 2010.  You must must be registered as a student on a philosophy, theology, religious studies, history of science or philosophy of science course (undergraduate single, joint or combined honours) in a UK higher education institution.
